Fourth of July Weekend Box Office Report (June 30th - July 2nd)
Disclaimer: Every Monday, I will post the top five movies that grossed the most money DOMESTICALLY (in the United States), with some brief thoughts about each film.
1. Despicable Me 3 ($72.4 Million): With an animated juggernaut coming out, it was only fitting that Despicable Me 3 took the number one spot. However, it is the lowest domestic opening since the first film. Is this the signal of the end of the franchise? We'll see how much longer Gru (and Dru?) and his adorable (annoying?) minions can last.
2. Baby Driver ($21.0 Million): Edgar Wright is back, and he's back in a big way. With the huge critical success that Baby Driver has become, it has made it into the number two spot on the top five. Seeing that it is made for a small budget, it has already made its money back and looks to make even more in the weeks to come, quietly racking up acclaim behind huge blockbusters like Wonder Woman and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
3. Transformers: The Last Knight ($17.0 Million): The Last Knight could be the last Transformers film in the franchise with how poorly it's doing. While it is making money internationally, which we all knew it would, it is making nothing in the US, and with a terrible critical reception, Michael Bay's mega-franchise looks to be sinking very, very soon.
4. Wonder Woman ($15.7 Million): This film, the saving grace of the DCEU, has managed to stay around. While not quite at the Guardians 2 domestic total, it very well may overtake it, being only about 40 million dollars behind. Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins have lifted the DCEU out of the pit it dug itself in, and I look forward to see what Justice League will do.
5. Cars 3 ($9.7 Million): With Despicable Me 3 out this week, there was no way that this mediocre film would do anything spectacular, and it ends up in the top 5. Despicable Me 3 looks to follow in the footsteps of Cars 3, sinking quickly, and Pixar doesn't look to have a hit with this film.
