Weekend Box Office Report (July 7th - July 9th)

Weekend Box Office Report (July 7th - July 9th)

Disclaimer: Every Monday, I will post the top five movies that grossed the most money DOMESTICALLY (in the United States), with some brief thoughts about each film.

1. Spider-Man: Homecoming ($117.02 Million): Spidey has come home as he swings into the top spot in the domestic box office. Taking in an impressive 15 million on Thursday night previews, Spider-Man: Homecoming exceeded expectations by taking in over $115 million dollars over the weekend. With the overwhelmingly positive word of mouth, this looks to be one of the biggest movies of the summer. Whether or not it has the legs of a movie like Wonder Woman remains to be seen (more on that later), but it is clear that the MCU has another success on their hands.

2. Despicable Me 3 ($34.00 Million): While being the second highest movie in the domestic weekend box office, this is still very disappointing for the Illumination film. With the domestic box office at just under $150 million, but with the mixed to negative word of mouth, this may be the end of this franchise. This is the only "kids/animation" movie out right now (other than Cars 3, which has quite disappeared from the public conscience), which explains its place at number 2, but this doesn't mean that this will last for long.

3. Baby Driver ($12.75 Million): Edgar Wright's latest film is one of the most lucrative by far. While not enough people are seeing this film, it still has made its budget back by far, and looks to be both financially and critically successful. The unique and vibrant/musical tone seems to have audiences coming to this movie, and it looks to make money in the weeks to come.

4. Wonder Woman ($10.14 Million): This film is in its sixth week. Sixth week. And it remains in the number four spot still. While Wonder Woman has not quite hit the worldwide box office of Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2, it is creeping up. While it looks like it won't hit that mark, the fact that it has this much stay power in the theaters is phenomenal, and DC should celebrate this victory.

5. Transformers: The Last Knight ($6.30 Million): Transformers is going nowhere. 6 million dollars in one weekend and in the number five spot, and this film looks like it's going to be booted out of theaters very soon. No one in the US wants to see this like the other films in the franchise, and while the international box office may boost it up slightly, this could very well be the end of the Michael Bay Transformer's films.
