Weekend Box Office Report (July 27th - July 29th)

Weekend Box Office Report (July 27th - July 29th)

Disclaimer: Every Monday, I will post the top five movies that grossed the most money DOMESTICALLY (in the United States), with some brief thoughts about each film.

1. Mission: Impossible - Fallout ($61.25 Million): Scoring the biggest opening of any film in the franchise, the Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, and Rebecca Ferguson led action blockbuster has thundered into theaters, taking in a huge 60+ million. Projections for the film landed it at around 40-50, so landing about 61 was a huge win for the movie, which looks to make over 600-700 million at the worldwide box office.

2. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again ($15.10 Million): Keeping its place in the number two spot, Mamma Mia 2 is hanging in there raking in another 15 million. The first film made over 600 million at the worldwide box office, and while this film may not make as much, it will certainly do well with a positive-mediocre critical reception.

3. The Equalizer 2 ($14.02 Million): Denzel Washington's latest film dropped from number one and dropped below to the number three spot, taking in 14 million. It just barely finished under Mamma Mia, but doesn't look to be going up at this point.

4. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation ($12.25 Million): The animated film that no one really cared about looks to have an audience. The children are going out to see this film, and it is continuing to make good money, possibly ensuring another sequel.

5. Teen Titans Go! To The Movies ($10.41 Million): Speaking of unexpected animated films, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies has received unexpected critical praise, holding a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and just beating out Ant-Man and the Wasp for the number five spot. We'll have to see how long the reception and word of mouth will carry this film in the weeks to come.

Star Wars: Episode 9 Reveals Cast - Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill Included

Star Wars: Episode 9 Reveals Cast - Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill Included

Star Wars: Episode 9 is about to begin production in just a couple days, and Disney and Lucasfilm have released an official statement with some intriguing nuggets of information regarding the cast. The statement is as follows:

"Star Wars: Episode IX will begin filming at London's Pinewood Studios on August 1, 2018. J.J. Abrams returns to direct the final installment of the Skywalker saga. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio.

Returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleseson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Noami Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Keri Russell, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.

The role of Leia Orgaan will once again be played by Carrie Fisher, using previously unreleased footage shot for Star wWars: The force Awakens. "We desperately loved Carrie Fisher," say sAbrams, "Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie's legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together for Episode VII.""

Mark Hamill is confirmed to be back, whether it's alive or as a Force Ghost, which is the popular theory. Fisher will also be back using old footage, which has come as a pleasant surprise to many Star Wars fans.

Star Wars: Episode 9 will hit theaters in December of 2019.

Arnold Schwarzeneger Has Begun Filming Terminator 6

Arnold Schwarzeneger Has Begun Filming Terminator 6

Arnold Schwarzeneger, star of the Terminator franchise and the former governor of California, has officially begun filming on the sequel in the Terminator franchise, Terminator 6. The film will be a direct followup to the second film, ignoring the previous three and will follow Schwarzeneger as wel as Linda Hamilton returning as Sarah Conner.

Terminator 6 will hit theaters on November 22nd, 2019.

Avengers 4 to Release in April?

Avengers 4 to Release in April?

Avengers: Infinity War is now out on digital, and will hit shelves on Blu-ray very soon. One of the biggest surprises about the film wasn't in the content itself, but int eh release date. A month or so before the announced release date in the first weekend of May, Robert Downey Jr announced via a clever Twitter interaction that Avengers: Infinity War was moved up to April. Whatever reasoning was behind this worked; the film went on to have the highest domestic opening weekend and went on to make 2+ billion dollars. Now, it looks Avengers 4 may hit theaters in April as well, just a month after Captain Marvel. IMAX has unofficially released a schedule and an announcement that says to come see Marvel's Avengers 4 in April of 2019, rather than May. These dates are usually domestic, and so the the speculation begins that the film will be pushed up to the last weekend of April just like Infinity War.

James Gunn to be Reinstated?

James Gunn to be Reinstated?

James Gunn has been released from Disney for a little while now, but there is still a huge amount of support for the director to be reinstated for Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume III. Now, the cast of the films have released a statement in their support to reinstate him. The statement, signed by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper,Sean Gunn, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, and Michael Rooker. says the following:

"An Open Letter from the Cast of "Guardians of the Galaxy

To our fans and friends:

We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss. In that time, we've been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into belieivng the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him.

Being in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies has been a great honor in each of our lives. We cannot let this moment pass without expressing our love, support, and gratitude for James. We are not here to defend his jokes of many years ago, but rather to share our experience having spent many years together on set making Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2. The character he has shown in the wake of his firing is consistent with the man he was every day on set, and his apology, now and from years ago when first addressing these remarks, we believe is from the heart, a heart we all know, trust, and love. In casting each of us to help him tell the story of misfits who find redemption, he changed our lives forever. We believe the theme of redemption has never been more relevant than now.

Each of us looks forward to working with our friend James again in the future. His story isn't over - not by a long shot.

There is little due process in the court of public opinion. James is likely not the last good person to bbe put on trial. Given the growing political divide in this country, it's safe to say instances like this will continue, although we hope Americans from across the political spectrum can ease up on the character assassinations and stop weaponizing mob mentality.

It's our hope that what has transpired can serve as an example for all of us to realize the enormous responsibility we have to ourselves and to each other regarding the use of our written words when we etch them in digital stone; that we as a society may learn from this experience and in the future will think twice before we decided what we want to express; and in so learning perhaps can harness this capability to help and heal instead of hurting each other. Thank yo u for taking the time to read our words.

The Guardians of the Galaxy."

Fox and Disney Merger Approved

Fox and Disney Merger Approved

Disney has long been pining for the company known as 21st Century Fox, and has been bidding extreme amounts of money for it. Now, after the late July shareholders meeting, it looks like Disney has finally almost acquired the company. Numerous reports have confirmed that the shareholders at 21st Century Fox have approved the merger during the vote, and now the government has to seal approval as the deal moves forward. It will remain to be seen as to how long this will take to be implemented, but the deal has been officially confirmed to be all but finalized.

James Gunn Fired From Marvel

James Gunn Fired From Marvel

James Gunn, the acclaimed director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, has been fired from Marvel after a political agenda unearthed some rape and pedophiliac tweets from Gunn's Twitter. These tweets were from over nine years ago, but were rediscovered recently, causing an uproar and prompting Disney to let him go from his next project, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume III. This decision seems to have been permanent, but support for Gunn has been vocal.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is Back!

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is Back!

While it did have a long run when it was here, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the animated show detailing certain events that took place between Episodes II and III was eventually canceled. Then, Star Wars: Rebels was announced and that ran for four seasons before meeting its end. But now, with the recent news from Comic-Con, Star Wars: The Clone Wars has officially been renewed to be on the Disney streaming service. It will be here for at least one more season, if not more, and from the trailer, we see returning voice actors and characters in James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan, Matt Lanter as Anakin, and most surprisingly, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano. A release date has not been confirmed.

Mowgli Acquired by Netflix

Mowgli Acquired by Netflix

While there may have already been one Jungle Book live-action film, another is on the way in the form of Mowgli, directed by legendary motion-capture actor Andy Serkis. But now a new wrinkle has entered the picture; according to reports, Mowgli will no longer have a theatrical run but will be released on Netflix. The property was acquired by Netflix and will presumably be distributed there. While the film seems to be on the same schedule, it remains to be seen whether or not this is a big deal for Serkis and gang.

Mowgli will hit theater on October 18th, 2018.

Two Wakandans Confirmed to be Alive after Infinity War

Two Wakandans Confirmed to be Alive after Infinity War

While many characters, including the king of Wakanda himself, bit the dust, no pun intended, come the end of Avengers: Infinity War, two key characters have been confirmed to have survived. Speaking to Screen Rant while promoting Mission: Impossible Fallout, Angela Bassett confirmed that both Shuri and Queen Ramonda survived the events of Infinity War. She said this when asked if she and Shuri survived:

"No. Neither did my daughter. Shuri, she's a bright girl there in Wakanda. So..."

While they both may not have a huge role in the upcoming Avengers 4, they will both presumably be in the film. Shuri may even be the new Queen/Black Panther of Wakanda.

Avengers 4 will hit theaters in May of 2019.

DCEU Rebranded to Worlds of DC

DCEU Rebranded to Worlds of DC

In light of the recent lack of success of the DCEU and the upcoming releases of both Aquaman and Shazam, Walter Hammada, the new head of DC, has officially decided to rebrand the property. Warner Bros. officially announced at San Diego Comic Con that the IP would be renamed Worlds of DC from the previously existing "DC Extended Universe", or DCEU. While we don't know if this is an indication of a reboot or a restart, it is a signifier that DC seems to be heading in a new direction.

Weekend Box Office Report (July 13th - July 15th)

Weekend Box Office Report (July 13th - July 15th)

Disclaimer: Every Monday, I will post the top five movies that grossed the most money DOMESTICALLY (in the United States), with some brief thoughts about each film.

1. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation ($44.10 Million): This one surprised me quite a bit. While I knew that this film would have a big market for the younger audiences, I didn't know that it would run off with the number one spot by almost double of number two. That being said, I don't believe this film will remain in the top 5 for long, perhaps another week or so.

2. Ant-Man and the Wasp ($28.84 Million): While making another 30 million dollars, Ant-Man and the Wasp took a 62 percent drop, which isn't quite ideal. While this film didn't have the expectations of Avengers: Infinity War, it would be a little concerning if the film performed under 300 million dollars worldwide. That being said, it has yet to open in many international markets for another few weeks, so it shouldn't have many problems.

3. Skyscraper ($25.49 Million): Dwayne Johnson's latest film is the next to join the disappointments as it staggers into the number 3 spot. This sort of proves that perhaps not every single Dwayne Johnson film is that marketable; everyone thought this would make another 10 - 15 million dollars more than it did, but it plopped into the number 3 spot.

4. Incredibles 2 ($16.22 Million): Still hanging ahead of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Incredibles 2 may be the very reason that Ant-Man and the Wasp isn't quite performing as strong as it should, with a slightly higher critical rating and a huge box office draw so far. Until July 27th, this film will be in the top 5.

5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($15.52 Million): Still raking in a ton of money, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is chugging along. Already at 1.1 billion, it will try to inch closer to the original film's historic 1.6 billion dollars.

How Did I Do (Weekend Box Office Predictions): N/A

Frozen 2 Adds Cast Members

A sequel is well underway, the film has cast two stellar actors to fill unspecified voice roles. According to reports, Frozen 2 has cast Sterling K. Brown, recently from Black Panther, and Evan Rachel Wood.

Scarlett Johansson Leaves Rub and Tug Amid Controversy

Scarlett Johansson Leaves Rub and Tug Amid Controversy

Scarlett Johansson, one of the most celebrated actresses in Hollywood today, has just exited a controversial project amid huge backlash. Johansson was set to play a transgender woman in a film called Rub and Tug, directed by director Rupert Saunders who also directed Ghost in the Shell, but now, with the large amount of backlash, Johansson has officially left the film. This seems to highlight bigger problems with the film fan community, and perhaps the general public on the whole, but it remains to be seen what happens next.

Chadwick Boseman and the Russo Bros. Reteaming for New Film

Now, it looks like they're going to re-team for a new film, entitled Seventeen Bridges. Boseman will also produce the film as well, and will play a disgraced cop. No word on a release date yet.

Neil Blomkamp to direct R-Rated RoboCop Returns

Joaquin Phoenix Joker Movie Official

Joaquin Phoenix Joker Movie Official

With so much talk about the Joaquin Phoenix Joker film in the past few months, it was only a matter of time before an official announcement was to come. The release date is not confirmed, but it will be coming within the next year.

Indiana Jones 5 Finds Release Date

Indiana Jones 5 Finds Release Date

A couple days ago, it was announced that Indiana Jones 5 will be hitting theaters in 2021, Now, Disney has announced the official release date for the fifth film, starring Harrison Ford. It remains to be seen if this movie will actually happen, seeing how busy Spielberg is going to be in the next few years.

Mary Poppins Returns Moves Release Date

Mary Poppins Returns Moves Release Date

Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt of recent A Quiet Place fame, has just moved release dates. It was originally going to hit theaters on December 26th, 2018, but now has moved up a week to December 19th, 2018. Why is this important? Because it adds another movie to the cluster of nonsense that's going on in December. From December 14th to December 21st, we have the following opening: Alita: Battle Angel, Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, Mortal Engines, Holmes and Watson, and Bumblebee. Clearly, there will be no real winner until films decide to move, but we'll have to wait and see.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween - Trailer 1 Review

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween - Trailer 1 Review

The first trailer for Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween has arrived. Does it deliver?

Thoughts: I first want to preface this by saying that I really enjoyed the first film. Was it the greatest film of all time? Absolutely not. But it was such a cheerful, entertaining, fun, light-hearted ride that I was completely not expecting, and I enjoyed nearly every second of it. And once I knew that there would be a second film, I was really excited. To be honest though, this trailer took me completely by surprise.

So what did I think of the trailer?

First of all, I won't lie and say I wasn't disappointed to see that the original cast wasn't there. I actually really enjoyed the original cast. Now, let me say that I understand the style of the books are having new characters every single time BUT not even Jack Black was therE voicing Slappy again? That scares me a little bit.

But on its own? The trailer was good. It didn't quite blow me away, but it looks like much the same of the first movie, which is just a light-hearted ride, withs some great visual effects. One thing I will say though is that it does look a little more like a "straight-to-DVD" kind of movie, but we'll just have to see. It's a very solid good first trailer.

Did it Raise Excitement? Not quite, but I think that's okay. If the next couple trailers aren't so great though, that may be a little worrying.

Trailer Rating: 6.5/10

First Shazam Image Released

First Shazam Image Released

DC is moving ahead with their Shazam film, starring Zachary Levi. Now, the first official image from the film has been released. It shows Levi's Shazam in full costume. Check it out below:

Samuel L. Jackson Drops Hint on Avengers 4 Return

Samuel L. Jackson Drops Hint on Avengers 4 Return

Samuel L. Jackson has been a staple from the MCU since the very beginning, dropping into the first Iron Man at the very end. Now, after ten years, Fury has somewhat disappeared, dropping in after the end of Infinity War in the giant dusting. But now, Samuel L. Jackson has dropped a photo on Instagram that may hint at his return. The photo is a fake business card with Fury's information. Along with that, the caption read, "Back to the familiar, the comfortable, the lovably fierce! Loving today's mood! #Can'tkeepagoodmandown #deliriouslyfurious."

Now again, this may have to do with the Captain Marvel film, which Jackson is confirmed to be in, but if this is a reference to Avengers 4, we may finally see Fury back in an Avengers film.

Avengers 4 hits theaters next MAy.

Disney and Fox Merger Encounters Small Hiccup

Disney and Fox Merger Encounters Small Hiccup

While tensions are rising between Disney and Comcast over who will acquire 20th Century Fox, another small road bump has presented itself. According to reports, major shareholder of 20th Century Fox, a man named Robert Weles has filed a lawsuit against the deal. Whether or not this completely prevents the shareholders meeting form happening in the first place remains to be seen, but this does add a new interesting wrinkle in the continuing saga.

Shazan Adds Cast Member

Shazan Adds Cast Member

The DCEU, despite all its problems, is still chugging alone, moving ahead with the Shazam film. Now, they've added two notable actors in roles. Djimon Hounsou, who Marvel fans will know from Guardians of the Galaxy, will be playing The Wizard in the film. He will join Zachary Levi, who is playing the titular character.

Shazam will reportedly hit next year.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Hits 17 Billion Dollars

Marvel Cinematic Universe Hits 17 Billion Dollars

Marvel has a next level of unprecedented success. Now, they've hit an all time high milestone. Through the first 20 films and the first 10 years, Marvel has officially grossed 17 billion dollars. This means that on average, each film makes a little less than a billion, and well into the 900 millions. This is a feat that has never been seen before; not only that, but Marvel could easily have another 20 movies up its sleeve in the coming years.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is in theaters here now. Captain Marvel will hit theaters in March and Avengers 4 will hit theaters in MAy.

Coming Soon: July 13th

Coming Soon: July 13th

Every Tuesday, I will be breaking down the top films hitting theaters that coming Friday. There are a large number of films that open every weekend, so I will highlight the films that I believe will be worth seeing.

1. Skyscraper: This is perhaps the biggest film that's coming out. Dwayne Johnson has kept himself busy over the past few years and he has yet another blockbuster hitting theaters in the form of Skyscraper. If you don't feel like watching Incredibles, Jurassic World, or Ant-Man, perhaps Skyscraper is the film for you. It certainly fills out the blockbuster spot that was taken by Ant-Man and the Wasp last week.

2. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation: The only other film worth watching in terms of major tentpole film could potentially be Hotel Transylvania 3. While this film (in terms of quality) looks awful, this is the perfect film to take kids to. Granted, I would recommend Ant-Man and the Wasp over this, since the trailers for this movie look absolutely atrocious, but regardless, this is opening this Friday.

Jeremy Renner Joins Spawn Movie

Jeremy Renner Joins Spawn Movie

Todd McFarlane's Spawn reboot is moving full steam ahead. The film, produced under Blumhouse productions, had previously added Academy-Award winner Jamie Foxx. Now, they've added veteran actor Jeremy Renner, famously Hawkeye, in the Bourne films, as well as the Mission nImpossible series.

Lando Calrissian Confirmed for Episode 9

Lando Calrissian Confirmed for Episode 9

We've been hearing more and more about Star Wars: Episode 9 more and more, and now, a long standing rumor has been confirmed. Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed that Billy Dee Williams will be heading to the Star Wars universe as Lando. He was last seen onscreen in Return of the Jedi, but he has been a part of the Star Wars universe, voicing Lando in TV Shows like Rebels.

Star Wars: Episode 9 will hit theaters on December 20th, 2019.

JB Smoove Joins Spider-Man: Far From Home

JB Smoove Joins Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home has begun principal photography, and now, it looks like they've added another cast member. According to reports, the film has added actor and comedian JB Smoove in a "leading role". While the role is unconfirmed, he seems to be having a huge part in the film, perhaps like a Tinkerer kind of role.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will hit theaters on July 5th, 2019.

Monday, July 9, 2018

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Joins the Billion Dollar Club

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Joins the Billion Dollar Club

While not quite as successful as the first film thus far, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has officially hit the billion dollar mark. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has passed such films as The Dark Knight, The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As of right now, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the number 25 all time worldwide grossing film, while the first film is slotted at number 5.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is in theaters now.

Captain Marvel Wraps Filming

Captain Marvel Wraps Filming

Brie Larson, Captain Marvel herself, has finished shooting on the film that will hit theaters next March. Taking to Instagram, she posted a picture announcing that  the film has wrapped principal photography.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is in theaters now. Captain Marvel will be in theaters next March and Avengers 4 will be in theaters next May.

Kevin Feige Gives Update on Avengers 4

Kevin Feige Gives Update on Avengers 4

Now that Ant-Man and the Wasp is officially in theaters, MCU fans are turning their attention towards the next films in the franchise. Captain Marvel will be in theaters in March, but fans are clamoring for updates on Avengers 4. Now, Kevin Feige has given some updates on where the studio is in the process of production. Speaking to Birth.Movies.Death, he said this"

'We're just starting the edit. The brothers [Joe and Anthony Russo] have worked on their cut, and we've been together in the editors room for a couple weeks now, so it's very early days. But it's much earlier than usual, right? Usually we're still filming. Captain Marvel comes out in March, while this one comes out in May and we're already starting. It's fun to get a jump. It's good having already shot the majority of the movie. So we're just getting into our traditional editorial process now.'

Hopefully, this does mean that we'll be getting something official soon, whether it be a trailer or some art.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is in theaters now. Captain Marvel will hit theaters in March 8th, 2019. Avengers 4 will hit theaters on May 3rd, 2019.

Weekend Box Office Report (July 6th - July 8th)

Weekend Box Office Report (July 6th - July 8th)

Disclaimer: Every Monday, I will post the top five movies that grossed the most money DOMESTICALLY (in the United States), with some brief thoughts about each film.

1. Ant-Man and the Wasp ($76.03 Million): Zipping into the number one spot with a cool 76 million is Ant-Man and the Wasp. The 20th MCU film, and the 20th MCU in a row to be in the number one spot in the box office, this is a monumental film for Marvel as it reaches the close of Phase 3, as well as the end of the first era of the Cinematic Universe we have come to love. Look for this film to have strong legs and hit about 300 million dollars domestically, and about 600-700 million worldwide.

2. Incredibles 2 ($29.02 Million): Stealing the spot from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and jumping over it, Incredibles 2 continues to chug along towards a billion dollars internationally. The film appears to be garnering huge repeat value, and I think it can stay in the top 3 or 4 for the next two or three weeks, at least until the next few blockbusters hit theaters.

3. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($28.59 Million): Taking a slight dip, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom falls to the number 3 spot. While it will remain in the top 5 for a long while, it may end up slowing down as July winds to a close. Look for it to comfortable make another 100-200 million total, but not come close to the first film.

4. The First Purge ($17.15 Million): The latest film in the Purge series comes out to a modest 17 million, which is good for a small, indie franchise like this. It will drop of soon, but it will probably make its budget back within a week or two.

5. Sicario: Day of the Soldado ($7.30 Million): This film is not being received well. Simply because it is a known IP is it in the top five, but don't expect it to make anywhere near a few million dollars more than the first one.

How Did I Do (Weekend Box Office Predictions): 5/5.
