Weekend Box Office Report (July 27th - July 29th)
Disclaimer: Every Monday, I will post the top five movies that grossed the most money DOMESTICALLY (in the United States), with some brief thoughts about each film.
1. Mission: Impossible - Fallout ($61.25 Million): Scoring the biggest opening of any film in the franchise, the Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, and Rebecca Ferguson led action blockbuster has thundered into theaters, taking in a huge 60+ million. Projections for the film landed it at around 40-50, so landing about 61 was a huge win for the movie, which looks to make over 600-700 million at the worldwide box office.
2. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again ($15.10 Million): Keeping its place in the number two spot, Mamma Mia 2 is hanging in there raking in another 15 million. The first film made over 600 million at the worldwide box office, and while this film may not make as much, it will certainly do well with a positive-mediocre critical reception.
3. The Equalizer 2 ($14.02 Million): Denzel Washington's latest film dropped from number one and dropped below to the number three spot, taking in 14 million. It just barely finished under Mamma Mia, but doesn't look to be going up at this point.
4. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation ($12.25 Million): The animated film that no one really cared about looks to have an audience. The children are going out to see this film, and it is continuing to make good money, possibly ensuring another sequel.
5. Teen Titans Go! To The Movies ($10.41 Million): Speaking of unexpected animated films, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies has received unexpected critical praise, holding a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and just beating out Ant-Man and the Wasp for the number five spot. We'll have to see how long the reception and word of mouth will carry this film in the weeks to come.
