Early Transformers: The Last Knight Reviews and Reactions - What are Critics Saying?
The fifth installment in the Transformers franchise is almost upon us; let's see what critics and reviewers are saying about the film.
The action, as per usual, is excellent
Michael Bay knows how to direct action. No matter what the quality of his films, he knows how to use the camera and his trademark explosions to showcase some brilliant action set pieces. Much was the same for Transformers: The Last Knight. He showcased yet again that he knows how to blow away your mind.
The Transformers are... cool?
In general, fans have been waiting to see a Transformers movie centered mainly around the Transformers themselves and not the human characters - while this may not be the film to them, critics are saying that the Transformers, mainly Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, are good characters and have solid arcs and good scenes. Optimus Prime especially chews up scenery when he's on screen.
It's the same nonsense that we've seen before
Now onto the bad. This movie is nothing but the same Transformers movies that we've been accustomed to seeing for the past few years. While this is the shortest Transformers movie in awhile, the film is set up the same way. Loud, explosive action, terrible dialogue, phoned-in performances, and a garbage story. Same-old, same-old.
The actors give decent performances...
When you cast A-listers like Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Hopkins, you know that no matter what, they're going to give at least a decent performance. In this film, they do their best with the material given and try to make their characters as compelling and as likable as possible.
...but the dialogue they're given is horrendous
That being said, there's only so much Anthony Hopkins can do when he's forced to crack jokes and say the word "dude". Him and Wahlberg, as well as newcomer Laura Haddock do their best, but unfortunately, the script drowns them out.
Please stop making more
While many critics enjoyed this film more than they did previous films, the same reactions were heard throughout the internet: "Please stop making more of these." Critics are saying that this is a tired franchise that does not deserve any more films and needs to die. Thankfully, Michael Bay is not directing another one of these.
The General Consensus?
While hopes were raised that this would be the Transformers film that we had all hoped for, this is another mediocre/terrible entry into a tired franchise. And unlike the Fast and Furious Franchise, five is not the lucky number. This franchise is set to sink alongside Pirates of the Caribbean.
Transformers: The Last Knight opens on June 20th, 2017. It stars Mark Wahlberg, Laura Haddock, and Anthony Hopkins. Humans are at war with the Transformers, and Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving the future lies buried in the secrets of the past and the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Now, it's up to the unlikely alliance of Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), Bumblebee, an English lord (Anthony Hopkins), and an Oxford professor (Laura Haddock) to save the world.
