Weekend Box Office Report (June 16th - June 18th)
Disclaimer: Every Monday, I will post the top five movies that grossed the most money DOMESTICALLY (in the United States), with some brief thoughts about each film.
1. Cars 3 ($53.55 Million): The latest entry into Pixar's hugely successful franchise, Cars 3 takes the number one spot. While critics have been mixed on the film, there is no denying that this is the film with the mass appeal, especially to younger viewers since school is out. Look for this film to drop rapidly as this is one of Pixar's lowest openings. And Despicable Me 3 is right around the corner. This is what you get when you make a sequel no one asked for.
2. Wonder Woman ($40.78 Million): The stunning fact about this film's box office doesn't even have to do with the amount of money it made: it has to do with the drop. Wonder Woman dropped only 30 percent in its 3rd week at the box office, climbing its domestic total to $275 million and its international total to $572 million. Whether or not it can catch Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume II for the highest grossing movie of the summer remains to be seen, but as of now, things are looking up.
3. All Eyez on Me ($27.05 Million): The story of Tupac, one of the most famous rappers ever, came in third at the box office. The critically panning this film got goes a long way to show how quiet the box office is this week besides the top two as we gear towards Transformers and beyond.
4. The Mummy (2017) ($13.92 Million): There is usually a disappointment on the list, and the Tom Cruise Mummy is a disappointment if I've ever seen one. Pitched as the start to the next big cinematic universe, The Mummy looks to be doing Universal no favors in box office and among critics. However, it remains to be seen how the international box office affects the film's total gross, but as of now, things aren't looking good for the monsters.
5. 47 Meters Down ($11.50 Million): The newest shark film, this horror/thriller film came in at number five, beating notable entries such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Rough Night, and Captain Underpants. While 47 Meters Down did well to make it into the top five, it doesn't look to be here to stay.
