Captain Marvel - Big Game Spot - Review
The Big Game Spot for Captain Marvel has arrived. Does it deliver?
Thoughts: Higher further faster, baby, Carol Danvers says as we see her zipping through space. I know that this TV spot is only thirty seconds, and I also know that the spot was meant for TV (being shown at the Super Bowl). But regardless of that, I think this small montage was incredibly poor, especially by Marvel standards.
Starting out the clip with the line "Higher, further, faster" is fine, but the repetition of the line by Larson in an incredibly corny, cheesy voice didn't do the spot any favors. Backed by the odd, retro-style music, and you have a very tonally dissonant TV spot, that is showing off some great action and great characters.
We see some limited shots of Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson, but really nothing that we haven't seen before. I think that the idea behind this trailer was to get more publicity out to a wider audience (Super Bowl), but I feel that Marvel's marketing whiffed majorly. The vibe I got from the trailer was "over-the-top cheese", and that is in direct contrast to Marvel's philosophy and previous marketing for the film.
Did it Raise Excitement? Being completely honest, this trailer made a bit nervous for the 21st movie in the MCU. This film looks like it's going to be a great time, and Brie Larson is a world class actress, but these 30 seconds didn't do anything to help the film's case.
